Kyiv’s public transport network includes metro, buses, trams, trolleybuses, and marshrutkas (private minibuses).
Metro
Three lines with 52 stations, operating approximately 6:00–00:00:
- M1 (Red): Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska
- M2 (Blue): Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska
- M3 (Green): Syretsko-Pecherska
Arsenalna station on the M1 line is the deepest metro station in the world at 105.5 metres.
Fares
- Metro and surface transport: 8 UAH per ride (proposed increase to 30 UAH in 2026)
- Marshrutkas: approximately 15 UAH, pay driver in cash
How to Pay
- Kyiv Smart Card — contactless rechargeable card
- Kyiv Digital app — mobile ticketing
- Contactless bank cards at metro turnstiles
- Marshrutkas: cash to the driver
War Considerations
- Curfew: typically 00:00–05:00 (no services during curfew)
- Metro stations serve as bomb shelters
- Air alerts may temporarily suspend service
- Boryspil Airport (KBP) has no commercial flights since February 2022
Taxis and Ride-sharing
Uklon (most popular Ukrainian app), Bolt (Estonian, cheaper), and Uber are available. Typical city ride: 80–300 UAH. Only use apps — do not hail taxis on the street.
Historical Note
Kyiv has one of the oldest tram systems in the world, dating from 1892. The funicular (since 1905) connects the upper city with Podil.
